Vefsna River - a fly fishing paradise in Norway

Nov 13, 2024

Departure from Milan for Helsinki, connection for Oslo and my holiday begins, first step is the Norwegian championship on the Glomma River, fishing on the Glomma and Unsetåa river and Lake Storsjoen from the boat, fishing mainly on nymph and dry for grayling. Great competition, well organized and a new experience fishing for grayling in the lake from the boat!
Once the competition is over, I head towards Mosjøen with the camper, after a year I return to fish on the legendary Vefsna river, a fantastic river with good presence of trout, grayling, sea trout and salmon. Im heading back to the waters I fist got the honor of visiting during the World Fly fishing Championship of 2013.
I am in the company of Cathrine Markussen, fishing guide and manager of the Vefsna Flyfishing Company, an expert on all the spots on the Vefsna river and an excellent angler and caster with a double hand rod.
Finally, after a year I can start fishing with the double hand rod again, learn to cast and perfect my casting and drifting for salmon and sea trout fishing.
Cathrine lends me a two-handed rod 14.6 #9/10, and a reel with a spey line to which I have attached an intermediate tip, then the leader and the X0 fluorcarbon tip, for flies I use (secret) flies imported from England.
I start casting under the supervision of the guide, who directs me and advises me on the setting and timing of the cast. The Vefsna river is a huge river, which you need to know and try to fish in the right places where the salmon move on their way up.
The river levels are a little high due to the recent rain and this moves the fish on their way up, fishing is even more exciting, every now and then you see or hear the fish jumping like rockets out of the water – making your heart stop if it is near!
The first day of fishing ends with a fish brought to the landing net and an unhooked fish, a sea trout weighing around 3 kg, beautiful, strong fish that require the equipment and the Cortland 2X fluorocarbon during the fight.
On the second day we change spots, we go to a stretch of the river where it divides in two and forms a large island, Cathrine and I begin to go down fishing, she is about 100 meters away from me, while I am fishing I realize that by every cast I make it improves and some reach considerable distances, but apart from a normal trout I dont feel anything, while instead Cathrine at the end of the day when it starts to get dark hooks a sea trout weighing more than 2 kg, hard fight and brought to the landing net to do the ritual photo before releasing the fish.
On the third day I am fishing alone, I go to a spot that I know well, also because last year in that area I hooked 3 fish, two sea trout and a salmon, only the salmon I managed to bring to the landing net, the others broke. Mindful of this place I started fishing with confidence and enthusiasm.
After the first few casts I hook the first fish, it immediately challenges me because it searches for the current, but I manage to bring it to the landing net, a sea trout of about 3 kg which I promptly release, I realize that it is a good moment and I immediately relaunch and as if by a right feeling I hook a second fish which is unhooked almost immediately.
Taken by the continuous enthusiasm in my fishing action, the 14.6 #9 rod seems very light, I can always
make long and beautiful casts, I hook another 3 sea trout ranging from approximately 3 to 5 kg, great fights and two yes they unhook when they are close to the landing net.
Then I catch two local brown trout and a 2kg juvenile salmon, all promptly released. What a day of action!

The fourth day I change spots, I go to a spot that I have never been to, beautiful with a strong and long current, on the other side of the river there is another fisherman who quickly catches a nice fish. Loaded I try to start fishing where the current is strongest and the river narrows, I start and I have difficulty casting because I am close to the mountain, but I take the measurements and cast after cast I realize that I have taken the measurements.
After about ten casts in a current that must have been more than 2 meters deep, I hooked a nice fish, my rod bends incredibly, I feel the friction of the reel going, outside the line, outside the baking, I manage to stop the fish and slowly recovering, when it arrives in front of me and I hope to see the fish, it unhooks to my surprise and disappointment, but fishing is also this…..

On the fifth day, I return to a spot that I know well, I set off as always confident and aware that after three years I finally have a good command of casting and fishing technique, supported by the many touches of the fish and the catches made.

What can I say, Vefsna river, fantastic, great emotions, wonderful landscapes, a challenging, technical river where you need to know where to go, how to fish and read a great river.
Great hospitality, excellent food which is not easy to find outside of Italy , Im sure I will return to fish in these waters dreaming of hooking one of those fish recorded on camera in the fish ladder by Laksfors, estimated to be a female of140 cm long and this would mean 26-27 kg. This is the Vefsna river, thanks also to Vefsnaflyfishing for the logistics and the guiding to the right spots in the different conditions.
Thanks also to Tommi fly because some flies that I have used successfully were made with his materials.

Yes please - I would like to read the Complete Diary of a World Champion.
